At the age of 12 my mother was taken away from me due to domestic violence. I wasn’t able to experience the things in life that only a mother can give to her daughter. She wasn’t around to help me get ready for prom, wedding, the birth of my children and all other things most mother/daughters get to experience together in life. My mother was taken away from me and my sister way to soon. At a very young age she became a victim of domestic violence. Several abusive relationships that she escaped from, except this time was different. She had broken off her relationship with her boyfriend and he told her if I can’t have you no one will. After a week of stalking her, on April 14, 1994, she had went to dinner with a friend. When they got close to her apartment building, they saw him parked behind a dumpster. They proceeded past the apartment and as he followed they tried to lose him and get into the parking garage before he could get in. But he ended up getting into the parking garage. He walked up to her and wanted her to go with him so that they could talk. When she told him no he got upset. He grabbed her by her throat and started choking her until her windpipe burst. He then dragged her to his car and was hitting her head against his car as she was fighting to get away. This caused severe blunt force trauma to her brain. He then grabbed a gun out of his car and shot her twice in the back. He then pushed her to the ground and left her on the street to die. She was taken to the hospital, as she was fighting for her life she was able to identify her abuser to the police while asking if she was going to die. On April 15, 1994, she lost her life due to domestic violence. She was a mother, daughter, sister and friend. All of who were also affected by this horrible incident. As a child I was unable to deal with the lose of my mother, which caused severe anxiety, depression and fear. On night I had a dream and God spoke to me in that dream. I knew then what he had called me to do. My mission is to help women and children escape domestic violence. Counsel family members who are also affected by the loss of a loved one due to domestic violence. No one should have to go through their life living in fear. “Love shouldn’t hurt”
